The wedding was an absolute disaster
Imagine the thoughts that are running through Jane's mind. She most likely loathes me now, for the lies that i have kept from her. To every person reading this, i never meant to betray the ways of god. I ask you, for forgiveness, i was only seeking my own happiness, even though how selfish it may have been. She deserved to know the truth. I never meant to drag innocent Jane down with me into this bottomless pit. Jane, please know that i love you, and i will be waiting for you... forever...
How can she possibly forgive you? Rochester, you put her in an impossible position by asking her to choose between love and morality, between you and God. Of course she could not choose you, however much she loved you (and maybe even continues to love you) because you are lawfully married to another, and she is a Christian woman of pure heart. You are completely irresponsible for causing such turmoil in the heart of an innocent young woman. Shame on you.
